In Christ Alone

As long as my flight doesn’t get cancelled again, I should be in the glorious state of North Carolina soon — home for Christmas.

Here is my Christmas gift to all. This is the greatest hymn written in my lifetime:

“In Christ Alone”
Keith & Kristyn Getty at Shadow Mountain Church

In Christ alone my hope is found;
He is my light, my strength, my song;
This cornerstone, this solid ground,
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My comforter, my all in all—
Here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone, Who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save.
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied;
For ev’ry sin on Him was laid—
Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay,
Light of the world by darkness slain;
Then bursting forth in glorious day,
Up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory,
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me;
For I am His and He is mine—
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death—
This is the pow’r of Christ in me;
From life’s first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny.
No pow’r of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand;
Till He returns or calls me home—
Here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand.

    • so what model of atonement do you hold?
      do you not like how Christus Victor, Penal Substitution and Moral Influence all play a part in the song.

      Penal Substitution deals with what it claims is a necessary solution to sin. What do you think about the necessity of this solution?

  1. Re: penal substitution

    But He was wounded for our transgressions,
    He was bruised for our iniquities;
    The chastisement [punishment] for our peace was upon Him,
    And by His stripes [wounds] we are healed.
    All we like sheep have gone astray;
    Each of us has turned to his own way;
    And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. (Isaiah 53:5-6)

    But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. (Romans 5:8-9)

    He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (2 Cor. 5:21)

    Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us–for it is written, ” CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE”– (Galatians 3:13)

    In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. (1 John 4:10)
