Brooke Fraser
June 6, 2008
Here is a fine video of “Albertine” by Brooke Fraser — a song recalling her trip to Rwanda. Brooke is a quite popular singer-songwriter in Australia (where she lives) and New Zealand (where she was born and bred) but is little known elsewhere. However, her intelligent lyrics and attractive voice have gained her increasing attention in the Christian music world. She attends Hillsong Church in Sydney and has contributed to the Hillsong United worship band. Her work with Hillsong is in the praise & worship genre, but her solo material is more akin to Jars of Clay or Nichole Nordeman. One positive sign that this is an above average artist is that her latest single, “C. S. Lewis Song,” is a song about themes from Lewis’ Mere Christianity.
I like this. Very good.
The thing that I had to keep reminding myself when I first heard Brooke Fraser was how old she was. Her first album came out when she was 18, her second at 21. How does a woman of that age acquire such a mature insight? This is no Pentecostal dolly bird singing boyfriend songs to Jesus. This is a woman of depth with a considerable amount of gray matter between her ears. And she keeps on getting better and better.
